The second African Transport Research Conference (ATRC 2027) will take place from 2 to 4 March 2027 in Cape Town, South Africa, with pre-conference events scheduled for 1 March 2027. Following the success of the inaugural edition held in March 2024, the conference aims to once again bring together researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to discuss the future of transport across the African continent.
Transport research in Africa is shaped by the continent’s diverse geography, rapidly growing urban areas, and complex socio-economic contexts. These conditions create unique opportunities for transport professionals to develop innovative research and practical solutions capable of transforming mobility systems throughout the region.
The conference is organised by the Centre for Transport Studies at the University of Cape Town, in partnership with the Volvo Research and Educational Foundations (VREF) through its Mobility and Access in African Cities (MAC) programme. ATRC 2027 seeks to attract scholars who can present empirical research findings and critical reflections on current transport practices and policies in Africa.
All submitted contributions will undergo a peer-review process, and selected papers will be considered for publication in leading academic outlets, including Elsevier’s African Transport Studies (AFTRAN) and Transportation Research Procedia (TRP).
ATRC 2027 is open to researchers from around the world whose work engages with African transport systems, offering an important platform to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and strengthen international collaboration in transport research.
Researchers interested in contributing are invited to submit their abstracts by 30 June 2026.
