About Us

The Africa Road Safety Academic Network (ARSANet) is an association of African universities and research centres dedicated to sharing academic knowledge and fostering improved road safety across the continent.

Its objective is to promote dialogue among members, encourage knowledge exchange, and support collaboration in understanding road safety challenges and identifying effective solutions. ARSANet operates as a network of academic institutions (universities, research centres, specialised hubs, etc.) and provides a platform for creating additional national, regional, and local road safety research networks in Africa.

The primary mission of ARSANet is to promote and coordinate high-quality research on road safety, support the implementation of research findings, and scientifically evaluate their outcomes.

To achieve this mission, ARSANet may undertake activities such as:

  • strengthening the scientific quality of road safety research
  • proposing road safety research topics and national research agendas for African countries
  • developing technical recommendations and guidelines for national and continental authorities
  • organising seminars, workshops, and expert meetings
  • participating in road safety research initiatives led by African or international organisations
  • facilitating international mobility and exchange of researchers
  • awarding prizes or scholarships to support road safety research

In 2025, ARSANet Members signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), establishing the network’s objectives and the general rules for forming the first ARSANet Steering Committee.

Following the elections held in September 2025, Dr. Eng. Chris Byaruhanga from Kyambogo University (Uganda) was elected as the first Chairperson of the ARSANet Steering Committee, a role he continues to hold.
